Microsoft path limitation
Please be aware that Microsoft's has a limit of about 260 characters for a path in windows.
- This means that the total path of the zip file, including the length of the path where you place it on your computer, should not exceed 260 characters.
- Example of a full path
'C:\Users\[user]\OneDrive - [Full user domain name]\Desktop\Cases\Clients\Active\Before fourth quarter\green clients\Statements and similar\Documentation\signed documents\for further processing\contracts.pdf'
Two available options to suggest for handling this issue is:
-
Choose a "higher" location on your PC, so that part of the path becomes shorter. - if this is possible, it is often a really good solution for such a situation.
-
You can use one of the zip tools in DocuNote, to help shorten the path of what you are downloading. see setting (595) in our manual: General settings
- note it affects all users

⚠️ Please note
- The function shortens the titles of folders and documents, to the desired number of characters distributed down through the entire structure.
- Thus, the titles of folders and files cannot be maintained in their full length.
</aside>
Alternative options are:
- Shorten titles of folders or documents in DocuNote before zip export.
- Move folders or documents "up" in the structure in DocuNote, so the paths are not so long.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to change Microsoft's handling of path length, so therefore the zip tools are made available. It is from here a bit of "playing" with what is the best solution, including in relation to what is considered most important - naming, location, structure, etc.
