Q: When should we transition to The New Outlook?
A: It depends partly on your company's policy. Currently, it's possible to "Opt in," meaning individual users can enable it if the company hasn't removed this option. At some point, Microsoft will announce that they're enabling The New Outlook as the default. For a period, it will be possible to "Opt out," i.e., return to the classic Outlook. Later, Microsoft will announce that they're permanently enabling The New Outlook, without the option to "Opt out." You can watch this video that explains the background and timeline.
The video below provides a status update from Microsoft and their plan. Note that it's from September 2023:
Update on the new Outlook for Windows
Q: Why can't the existing Add-in be used in The New Outlook?
A: The technology in the now 25-year-old classic Outlook uses "COM," which is a technology that only exists in desktop applications. The New Outlook is web-based, so a completely new add-in that supports this is needed.
